We hear a lot these days about nervous system regulation—about how we can be calmer, more balanced, and more present. But does a healthy nervous system really mean that we’re always calm?
The goal isn't to always be calm
We often think we’re doing well when we’re calm. But nervous system health doesn’t mean we’re always peaceful, slow, and balanced.
The health of the nervous system is better reflected by our ability to move flexibly between different states:
- Can we step up when action is needed?.
- Can we relax when we're safe?.
- Can we cry without losing ourselves in it?.
- Can we feel anger without causing destruction?.
- Can we stay in the present with what we have?.
Self-discipline is not a fixed state. It is a skill.
It can also be a sign of self-control if you cry but remain present at the same time. If you’re aware of what’s happening but don’t completely lose yourself.
